Low Self-Esteem Therapy in Manchester

Low self-esteem can affect how you see yourself, your relationships, and how you show up in the world. You might be living with constant self-criticism, doubt or the feeling that you're not good enough. Over time, this can limit your confidence, your choices and your wellbeing.

As a BACP-registered therapist, I offer one-to-one counselling in Manchester to support people struggling with low self-esteem and self-worth. Our sessions will give you space to explore where these feelings come from, and how you might begin to build a more compassionate relationship with yourself.

If you’re ready to look at what’s holding you back, I’m here to support you.

Understanding Low Self-Esteem

Low self-esteem isn’t always loud or obvious. It can look like constantly second-guessing yourself, downplaying your achievements, struggling to say no, or feeling like you're never quite good enough, no matter what you do. Over time, it can affect your confidence, relationships, emotional wellbeing and how you show up in the world.

You might be stuck in patterns of people-pleasing or perfectionism. You may avoid attention or find it hard to accept praise. For some, self-esteem is shaped by criticism, bullying or neglect in earlier life. For others, it’s been worn down slowly through life events, relationships or internal pressure to always be better.

Whatever your story, you don’t have to keep carrying it alone. Therapy can help you begin to understand where these feelings come from and gently begin to shift them.

How Low Self-Esteem Therapy Can Help

Low self-esteem often comes with a harsh inner voice — the part of you that says you’re not enough, that doubts your worth, or expects failure before you even begin. Therapy is a space to challenge that voice and get in touch with the parts of you that deserve more care.

Together, we might explore:

  • The origins of self-critical thoughts and patterns

  • How early experiences shaped the way you see yourself

  • The impact of shame, rejection or perfectionism

  • Strategies for setting boundaries and building confidence

  • What self-compassion could look like in your day-to-day life

You don’t need to pretend to feel better than you do. Therapy is a place where you can show up as you are, and begin to relate to yourself in a kinder, more balanced way.

My Approach

Low self-esteem is rarely just about one thing. It’s often tied to relationships, memories, expectations and the way you’ve learned to protect yourself. I won’t ask you to change overnight or push yourself into false positivity. Instead, we’ll work with your experience as it is, honestly and gently.

My approach is person-centred, which means we’ll start with what matters most to you. I’ll offer consistent, non-judgemental support as we explore what’s shaped your sense of self and what might help you feel more grounded and at ease in yourself.

When it’s helpful, I may also draw on ideas from Transactional Analysis (TA) or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) — particularly if we’re working with unhelpful thought patterns or exploring emotional triggers. But our work will always be collaborative and led by you.

Why work with me

I’m a Level-4 certified BACP-registered therapist (you can see my credentials here) with experience supporting people who feel stuck in cycles of self-doubt, shame or internal criticism. You won’t be expected to perform confidence or pretend to feel fine.

This is a space where you can begin to understand how your self-esteem has been shaped — and start building something new, slowly and with support.
