Depression Therapy in Manchester

Depression can feel heavy and isolating. It might show up as sadness, numbness, irritability or exhaustion. Sometimes it’s hard to explain, and even harder to ask for help. You’re not alone, and you don’t have to face it without support.

As a BACP-registered therapist, I provide one-to-one therapy for depression in Manchester. Our sessions are a safe, confidential space where you can speak openly about how you’re feeling, without judgement or pressure. We’ll work together to understand what’s contributing to your experience and begin to look at ways to feel more connected and supported.

If you’re struggling with low mood or depression and want to explore how therapy might help, I’m here when you’re ready.

Understanding Depression

Depression can affect every part of life; your energy, mood, motivation and sense of self. You might feel numb, low, exhausted or disconnected from the things and people you used to care about. Even simple tasks can feel overwhelming. Some days, just getting out of bed might feel like an achievement.

Depression doesn’t always look like sadness. It can show up as irritability, brain fog, physical heaviness or a quiet sense of emptiness that’s hard to explain. You may feel like you're going through the motions, pretending to be okay while struggling silently underneath.

It’s also common to feel guilt or frustration for not being able to “snap out of it”, especially if others don’t fully understand what you’re going through. But depression isn’t something you can think or will your way out of. It’s something that needs care, space and support.

How Depression Therapy Can Help

Therapy offers a confidential space to explore what’s happening for you, without judgement or pressure. You don’t need to explain everything clearly or have a reason for how you feel. We’ll start from where you are, and work together to begin making sense of it.

Together, we might explore:

  • What contributes to your low mood, fatigue or disconnection

  • Patterns of self-criticism, withdrawal or overwhelm

  • How your relationships, history or stressors might be playing a role

  • Strategies for managing daily life in a more compassionate way

  • What healing or hope could look like - even if that feels far away right now

Therapy for depression isn’t about fixing you. It’s about creating space to feel what you’re feeling, understand where it’s coming from, and begin to move through it at a pace that’s right for you.

My Approach

When you’re experiencing depression, motivation and emotional energy can feel in short supply, even asking for help might have felt like a huge effort. I won’t expect you to come to sessions with everything figured out. If you’re feeling flat, unsure where to begin, or just need someone to listen, we can start there.

My work is grounded in a person-centred approach. That means I take the time to understand what your experience of depression feels like for you, not just the symptoms, but how it affects your relationships, routines, self-worth and day-to-day life. You set the pace, and I’ll support you to explore whatever feels most important.

When helpful, I may draw on ideas from Transactional Analysis (TA) or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), particularly if we’re looking at patterns of thinking, self-criticism or emotional withdrawal. But our work won’t be about trying to fix or push through your feelings. It’s about building space for them, so you can begin to understand what’s really going on and what you need in order to move forward.

Why work with me

I’m a Trauma-Informed  Level-4 certified, BACP-registered therapist (see my credentials here) with experience supporting people through many forms of depression, whether it’s long-standing, reactive to life events, or something that’s come and gone over time.

You won’t be rushed or judged. I’ll meet you with care, patience and honesty, and help you begin finding a way forward that feels more grounded and manageable.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Depression Counselling

How do I know if I have depression?

If you are experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or a lack of interest in activities for more than two weeks, it is essential to consult a mental health professional for a proper diagnosis. Depression can manifest differently for each individual, and a qualified therapist can assess your symptoms and recommend the most suitable course of action.

How long does depression therapy typically last?

The duration of depression therapy varies depending on each individual's unique circumstances, progress, and therapeutic goals. While some people may benefit from short-term therapy, others may require more extended support. As your therapist, I will work closely with you to assess your needs and adjust the therapy duration accordingly, ensuring you receive the most appropriate care.

How can you help me with my depression?

As an experienced therapist specialising in depression, I am committed to providing compassionate, personalised care to support your healing journey. By utilising a range of evidence-based therapeutic frameworks and tailoring the approach to your specific needs, I aim to help you process your emotions, develop effective coping strategies, and build resilience for lasting recovery.

Can depression therapy be provided online or over the phone?

Yes, I offer various modes of interaction to accommodate your needs and preferences. In addition to face-to-face sessions, I provide therapy via Zoom/Video call, telephone, and walking therapy. This flexibility allows you to access the support you need in a manner that is most comfortable and convenient for you.

What if I am not comfortable discussing my emotions?

Your comfort and safety are of utmost importance to me. As your therapist, I will never pressure you to disclose information that you are not ready to share. The therapeutic process is a collaborative effort, and we will work at a pace that feels comfortable for you. Our goal is to build trust and establish a safe space for you to explore your experiences and emotions when you feel ready.

Can you help family members or friends of someone with depression?
